Learning Outcome 3

Learning Outcome 3:

The approach that I have taken over the course of this semester when it came time to reading critically is ultimately to be patient and make sure to reread. Being patient, no matter the length of the readings, has helped me to truly engage with the text causing this positive chain reaction or domino effect, where the rest of the writing process flows well and becomes fairly easy on me to write. When reading the articles that we were given throughout the course, I annotated passages or main ideas that I knew the authors were trying to get across to the reader. I wrote in the margins either short summaries of the things I underlined, therefore making it easier for me, when I had to revisit the articles when writing my papers or sometimes beforehand (on writing my paper), I’ll highlight or underline sentences that I know have the potential to be quotes in my essay that will help further my argument I want to make.  I found that there were similarities with what Gilroy states to what I have been doing, which was as we wrote our papers and were given new articles to read, I started to notice that all of the articles that we read were connected in some ways, which made me appreciate them more and from there on, I tried to link articles together when reading the respective articles. I saw the trend in how the prompts for our essays go and the formatting for how we should be thinking when writing the essays, hence why I tried to find my quotes early. I simply wanted to think ahead for the next paper. I also said making sure to go back and reread because our papers were very detailed and compacted questions that had many layers, so going back once or twice to reread the articles was never a bad thing. I believe this means that I have become very conscious when I read, which I don’t believe a lot of other people take the time to be, as they skim over long passages only getting the gist of what’s on the actual page.
